Alaskan cities don’t have big gay neighborhoods that make it easy to ask the locals or pick up a publication with bar listings.
True to Alaskans’ independent spirit, you won’t find chain hotels in much of the state, but rather family-owned inns and beds and breakfasts. Try to book through a current LGBT site like Purple Roofs (http://www.purpleroofs.com) to ensure you find one that’s gay-friendly.
- When driving the Alaskan Interior be sure to start any road trip at a time a gas station is open, and fill up the tank. Gas stations are few and far between, and if one is closed it may be quite a distance to the next.
- Bring extra-large memory discs for your camera and keep the batteries charged at all times. Nature and wildlife are everywhere and you don’t want to miss a shot and photographing that moose.
